Ajo Elementary School
Ajo Elementary School services Kindergarten through Eighth Grade on the District Campus. Ajo Elementary Kindergarten through Third Grades are housed in an area separate from the rest of the campus, and the Fourth through Eighth grades share the main campus with the High School, utilizing the northern wing of the campus. Ajo Elementary also provides space on campus, directly next to the K-3 section, for Pre-School cooperating with Head Start. Ajo Elementary Educational ProgrammingAjo Elementary School follows a balanced literacy approach to instruction through the framework of the Four Blocks program. The Four Blocks program prepares Ajo Elementary students for success under the belief that reading and writing instruction should be imbedded within all curricular areas. This program, supported by pull-out reading intervention and Accelerated Reader provides Ajo Elementary students with multiple opportunities to improve their literacy skills and language acquisition. The Houghton-Mifflin language arts text series provides additional instructional support to meet the needs of all readers, including students with limited English proficiency. In addition to the balanced literacy approach, Ajo Elementary teachers utilize various strategies to address different learning styles and needs in the instruction of mathematics, science, social studies and other curricular areas. Many teachers utilize centers and manipulatives to help our students grasp difficult concepts in mathematics, in addition to Accelerated Math computer based curriculum that allows for differentiation of instruction at the student's skill level. Professional development in the balanced literacy Four Blocks program, student engagement, and curriculum mapping is ongoing for all Ajo Elementary teachers in order to provide the best educational opportunity for Ajo Elementary School students. Supporting our teachers in the classroom is a cadre of volunteers organized through the Ajo Lions Club to assist students in their reading endeavors. If you or any one you know, would like to assist by giving one-on-one reading support for an Ajo Elementary School student, contact Leah Godwine-Cesarec at 520-387-3740 with Project ALeRT. Students can also receive additional support through the Homework Help program provided by Bi-Lingual Instructor Mrs. Stella Peterson on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the Salazar-Ajo Library. For more information concerning this program, call 520-387-6075. MusicAjo Elementary Music Teacher Susan Spitzer will produce a Winter Concert scheduled for Thursday, December 13th at 7:00pm. You may expect to hear musical medleys from all students ranging from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade and the Ajo Junior and High School Band.
