      • AIMS Testing High School Math & Science the week of the 5th, Math make-ups on the 14th. Elementary AIMS and 2nd grade Standford tests will be the week of the 12th.
      • Raider Bus was vandalized by a former student. Windows broken out. The District pressed charges and the case will go to trial on the 22nd of April.
      • Next Monday April 12th, the Superintendent is meeting with 2 other superintendents (Babo & Alter Valley) to explore a consortium for Sped providers.
      • Carbo reading lab for the High School students. Beginning set up and training in April.
      • Meet & Confer is 50% finished for Certified. The Administration will have a document to ratify at the May Board meeting.
      • Please turn your attention to the south wall, to view Mr. Lopez' fifth grade classes' presentation on Read Across America.
    6. Adoption of Agenda

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to adopt the agenda. Mrs. Cameron seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    Visitors are welcome to speak on non-agenda items. Comments are limited to 3 minutes. Please state your name and address prior to making your comments. The Board will not take any legal action on issues raised during this position of the meeting.

    Mrs. Rossi made the motion to approve the consent agenda. Mrs. Runge seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

  5. Business

    1. Disposal of Obsolete Media Center Equipment

      Brenda Mojica has identified the attached lists (2) of equipment as being obsolete or broken beyond repair. Per USFR guidelines we are seeking Board approval to dispose of this equipment.

      Mrs. Cameron made the motion to approve the disposal of the items on the attached two lists of obsolete/damaged media center equipment. Mrs. Runge seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    2. Board Approval of Prepaid Insurance

      The Administration is asking for permission to prepay insurance from the 09/10 funds for the 10/11 school year.

      Mrs. Runge seconded the motion to approve the Prepayment of Insurance for the 2010/2011 school year. Mrs. Cameron seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    3. Facility Use Agreement - Community Food Bank

      The Community Food Bank is requesting the use of the Ajo School cafeteria from May 28 to July 30, 2010 for the Summer Feeding Program. This program provides breakfast and lunch for children in the Ajo community free of charge.

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve the Facility Use Agreement between the AUSD and CFB. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    4. JTED Intergovernmental Agreement

      Attached is the JTED Intergovernmental Agreement between the Joint Technical Education District and the Ajo Unified School District. This agreement is needed to ensure JTED classes such as Auto Shop, Culinary Arts, Web Design, Drafting, First Responder and others at the Ajo Unified School District.

      Mrs. Cameron made the motion to approve the IGA between AUSD and JTED. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    5. Out of State Travel - Superintendent

      I (the superintendent) have a personal trip scheduled to southern Kansas the week of April 19, 2010. There are 4 colleges/universities in the near vicinity of my destination. I plan to visit as many of these schools to recruit for hard to fill teaching positions. I am asking that the Ajo Unified School District pay for a rental car and up to two nights hotel expense. I will be paying for all other costs.

      Mrs. Rossi made the motion to approve the above out of state travel. Mrs. Cameron seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    6. Board Approval of Summer School Plan

      The Administration is recommending that high school summer school be held for 16 days, for 4 hours per day for 16 days, June 7-30, 2010. The staffing for high school summer school will be up to 4 teachers and up to 3 paraprofessionals. Elementary school summer school will be a "jump start" model and will be held 4 hours a day for 16 days July 19th to August 12, 2010, with up to 4 teachers and 3 paraprofessionals. The focus of elementary summer school will be reading, math, and writing.

      Salary Cost: 8 teachers X 5 hours per day (prep period) X 16 days @ $25 per hour = $8,000
      Materials: 8 teachers X $200 classroom budget = $1,600
      Paraprofessionals: 6 staff members X 4 hours @ $9 per hour (estimated) = $3,500
      Total Estimated Cost: $13,100

      Mr. David made the motion to approve the above Summer School Plan. Mrs. Runge seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

  6. Curriculum & Instruction

    1. Adoption of District Assessment Planning

      To enhance duty driven instructional decisions, the Administration is formally organizing our academic assessments into a District Assessment Plan (DAP). The DAP will include the following assessments during the 2010/2011 academic year:

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve the above District Assessment Plan. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    2. Subsidiary Curriculum Adoption

      BUCKLE DOWN E-2020 ACCELERATED READER
      ACCELERATED MATH NRSI 4 BLOCKS LIT. MODLE

      The above sources of curriculum are used throughout or will be used throughout, our campus next year. To be compliant with procurement requirements, the Administration is asking the Board to adopt these as part of the Ajo Unified School District's curriculum until such time that they are no longer a part of our educational program.

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve the adoption of the above subsidiary curriculum programs. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    3. Restructuring of Kindergarten Program

      Due to the fact that the Arizona State Legislature has voted to cease funding all day Kindergarten, the Ajo Unified School District needs to reduce our Kindergarten teaching staff from 2 FTE to 1 FTE teacher(s) to balance our 2010/2011 budget. The Administration is continuing to research ways to offer the students more than a ½ day school experience.

      Mr. David made the motion to approve restructuring the Kindergarten program for the 2010/2011 school year. Mrs. Runge seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

  7. Student Activities

    1. Senior Out of State Trip

      The Ajo High School class of 2010 is seeking permission to travel to the Magic Mountain Disney Land (North of Los Angeles, CA) for their senior trip. This will be a "turn around" trip. The proposed departure time is May 24, 2010 May 20, 2010 at 12 Noon. Arrival at Magic Mountain Disney Land approximately 9:00 p.m. May 24, 2010 May 20, 2010 and departure from Magic Mountain Disney Land should be 6:00 a.m. the morning of May 21, 2010. Arrival in Ajo should approximately 3:00 p.m., May 25, 2010 May 21, 2010.

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve the above out of state student travel. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

  8. Personnel

    1. Resignation of Certified Personnel - Rebecca Estolano

      Rebecca Estolano has submitted her notice of resignation effective at the end of the 2009/2010 academic year.

      Mrs. Cameron made the motion to accept Mrs. Estolano's resignation. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    2. Resignation of Certified Personnel - Zoe Walsh

      Zoe Walsh has submitted her notice of resignation effective at the end of the 2009/2010academic year.

      Mrs. Cameron made the motion to approve Ms. Walsh's resignation. Mrs. Runge seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    3. Resignation of Certified Personnel - Dixie Grissom

      Dixie Grissom has submitted her notice of resignation effective at the end of the 2009/2010 academic year. This concludes her service of 40 years to the Ajo Unified School District.

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve Mrs. Grissom's resignation effective May 2010. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    4. Resignation of Certified Personnel - Margarita Martinez

      Margarita Martinez has submitted her notice of resignation effective at the end of the 2009/2010 academic year. This concludes her service of 38 years to the Ajo Unified School District.

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve Mrs. Martinez' resignation effective May 2010. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    5. Resignation of Certified Personnel - Oscar Sisk

      Oscar Sisk has submitted his notice of resignation effective at the end of the 2009/2010 academic year.

      Mrs. Cameron made the motion to approve Mr. Sisk's resignation. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    6. Reduction in Force (RIF) of Certified Personnel

      If the May 18, 2010 proposed 1% statewide sales tax is not approved, it will be necessary to conduct a Reduction In Force (RIF) of certified personnel. These teachers being RIF'd must be notified prior to April 15, 2010. "Call backs" would commence if the passage of Proposition 100 is successful. Persons being recommended to receive RIF notification are Joanna Higgins, Leslie Belskis, and Gerlie Ubarco.

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve the above teachers for RIF. Mrs. Rossi seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

    7. Volunteer - Assistant Track Coach - Ryan Higgins

      Ryan Higgins, husband to Joanna Higgins, a fourth grade teacher and the assistant Track Coach, would like to volunteer with the Track Team.

      Mrs. Runge made the motion to approve Ryan Higgins as a volunteer track coach. Mrs. Cameron seconded the motion. The motion passed 4-0.

Noting no other business before the Board, Mrs. Rossi, acting President of the Board, adjourned the meeting at 6:08 p.m.
