Georgia O'Keeffe inspired Pastel Drawings

In this lesson, the students learned about the prolific artist, Georgia O'Keeffe. The students read a biography of O'Keeffe's epic life. (She lived till she was 99 years old!)A still life was created that included subjects similiar to those used by Georgia O'Keeffe, including skulls, bones, rocks and flowers. The students chose an interesting composition using a viewfinder and thumbnail sketches. As an introduction to mixing pastels, the students completed a color wheel including 12 colors. They used white charcoal to layout their composition on black paper and colored chalk pastels to complete the image in the bold colors similiar to the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. In addition, the students participated in a peer group critique as part of the creative process.
