Message From Superintendent Dooley

I look forward to seeing your child/children in our school on August 5, 2019, as the fall school year of 2019-2020 begins. Schools are a great place to be for me, but they are much more interesting when all of our students return every August.

The maintenance staff, payroll, and accounts payable staff, food services staff, and the administrative staff have worked hard this summer to clean our classrooms, deal with construction, develop budgets, and hire staff. This district, nor any other district cannot function without those different groups of employees.

The State of Arizona passed a law about 12 years ago that requires every student in every public school in the state to register every year. Just like they were new students. If you have not done this, please do so as soon as possible. We want your child registered by August 5, 2019, so they can begin the school year with their classmates. This is not an Ajo School rule. It is a state law.

We encourage you to read Superintendent Dooley's letter in its entirety.

Breakfast and Lunch Program

The Ajo Unified School District has been selected to participate in a breakfast and lunch program that would allow every student to eat at the cafeteria at no cost! To accomplish this, we need to equal or increase our 82% free and reduced application approval from last year.

This program is called Provision 2 and is sponsored by the Arizona Department of Education and the United States Department of Agriculture. If we reach our 82% application approval for free and reduced meals from last year, this no-cost program will be available on a five-year cycle. This means no cost, free meals at Ajo schools for all kindergarten through 12th grade students automatically for the next five years. We need your help to make this happen!

We sent parents and guardians an application for free and reduced priced meals on July 1, 2019. Parents and guardians need to fill out the application and return it to the school to make sure that all Ajo school students can eat at the cafeteria at no cost to parents and guardians. All applications are due by August 23, 2019. A self-addressed stamped envelope was provided for you in the July 1 mailing. Please turn in and submit your application even if you feel you do not qualify or if your student brings their lunch and/or breakfast.

Applications are available in the school office, the cafeteria, and the district office. If you have any questions about this program, please call (520) 387.5618.

Summer Meals Program

The summer meals program will start on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, for all children under the age of 18. Breakfast will run from 7:30 until 9:30 a.m. and we will extend lunch to run from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The cafeteria will not be open on Fridays. If you need more information, please contact Robert Ogden in the cafeteria at (520) 387.5685. You can also view our summer meals flyer in English or our summer meals flyer in Español.
